Do you have mushrooms under your hood?
We have the opportunity to do some work on Randy Hassett’s race car. He currently races his E36 BMW in the BMWCCA IS class and in NASA GTS 2. The first project we are doing is reinforcing the front strut mounts. Some mushrooming has begun as can be seen in this photo.
This is a high fail item. Please be sure to inspect your own car before heading back onto the track next year. The car also had two blown struts. We will be sending the set off to JRZ to be rebuilt.
Repair and Reinforcement of Strut Mounts
As seen above the front strut mounts especially the left had begun to mushroom out. This could have led to failure without correction. The first thing we did was to secure the strut mount to the frame. This is depicted in the following photos.
Consider this secured. Notice the channel created to keep hoses and wiring straight. Next we welded a steel plate to the inside of the well. Then bolts were used to conform the top of the damaged strut mount to the plates. This is depicted in the following photos.
We are also following the same process in the rear as can be seen in the following photos.
